History

SellIt is a privately held company.  It was born in the UK in the year 2000.

The founder of the business, Jane Schmidt, had seen the changing buying patterns of the masses.  Internet shopping was starting to take a bite out of traditional retailers and so the traditional corner shops were doing increasingly well.

Her thinking was that there was a gap in the market for a chain of stores which sat in high density populations selling what the locals wanted as a matter of urgency.    She was also immensely frustrated by the lack of quality service in retail in the UK.   Jane knew this would only work however if she had a model which could accommodate the different buying needs of people with different backgrounds.

Jane selected Birmingham in England as the first location.   It has a great cross section of cultures and buying patterns and she chose the towns / suburbs of Smethwick and Sparkhill.  After teething troubles with suppliers after 2 years they managed to not only have captured the retail trade in those suburbs they were getting publicity around the quality of service.

Fast forward to 2008 and SellIt had 120 stores around the UK with a market share of 10%.

In mid 2005 when it was apparent that the model worked Jane and the leadership team decided to grow the business across Europe.

As of 30 June 2018 SellIt had stores in 9 countries and in every one enjoys around a 10% market share.  They are currently planning to expand to other countries both in Europe and one very exiting venture in a new continent – watch this space.
